Flexible AMS for Carbon Capture

Challenge

Existing legislation in Denmark requires dual instrumentation for CO2 capture systems, which means that companies must invest in and maintain two separate monitoring systems.

This not only results in high financial costs, but also an unnecessary administrative burden that limits companies’ flexibility to adapt. It creates a situation where companies may be reluctant to invest in carbon capture technology, preventing a more effective reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Solution

The project partners, Olicem, 12plus30 and FORCE Technology, wanted to develop a more flexible approach to monitoring air emissions from CCUS plants by optimizing the placement of Automated Measuring Systems (AMS) and implementing new calculation methods.

By strategically placing these measurement systems and using advanced calculation techniques, the project achieved more accurate and cost-effective CO₂ emission measurements. This not only reduced the direct costs associated with duplicate instrumentation but also lessened the administrative burden on companies and gave them greater flexibility to adapt.

In addition, the improved CO₂ reporting strengthened Denmark’s ability to monitor and regulate greenhouse gas emissions and thereby contributed to meeting national and international climate targets.

Effect

The project tested theories and models at physical sites. The results were presented to the Reference Laboratory for Air Emissions and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency as a basis for potential adjustments to guidelines for the setup of such plants.
