Naturpladen: Regenerative acoustic panels create a sustainable future

Noise is one of Europe’s most significant challenges to human well-being and the environment. Prolonged noise can affect health and sleep, so it’s essential to reduce noise as much as possible. Naturpladen has found the answer. Through a knowledge bridge project, they have developed a sustainable solution to the fight against noise.

Naturpladen, based in West Funen, has developed acoustic panels grown from mycelium, the root network of fungi that acts as a natural binder. Their solution can replace the need for cement and plastic, making the product organic and compostable. Initial tests from Naturpladen showed that the product’s fire properties needed to be improved before they could go to market. Here, the project partners have played a crucial role in improving the quality.

Naturpladen has received help in the form of advice, testing, and analysis in collaboration with the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology and Bollerup Jensen.

The knowledge bridge project has created success for further development

The knowledge bridge project has created a foundation for developing a market-ready product from Naturpladen. Bollerup Jensen and Naturpladen, together with the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology, have been able to test and implement several measures that make it realistic to scale up and market the product in the long term.

The additives that provided the necessary fire safety have meant that we have built up a belief that the product can be approved with the right measures – final report

The project has contributed to fewer fire tests, which has been very valuable for Naturpladens’ further development. Naturpladens’ solutions create a product that reduces the carbon footprint, increases biodiversity, and promotes a circular economy. With the Knowledge Bridge project, they have taken a huge step towards realizing and scaling up their product.

The Knowledge Bridge project was co-financed by the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science.
