When it rains, large amounts can fall in a short time. This creates pressure on the sewer system, which is why municipalities need to adapt to climate change to delay water locally. This can be expensive and connecting larger catchment areas can be a solution. But what about capacity? Smart Brønd can help with that, and through a knowledge bridge project, they have developed a product that can give municipalities and utilities a better understanding of their pipes.
Smart Brønd is a small company with big ambitions. They have created a solution that offers high precision and data logging when it comes to monitoring water level and flow. Their product has been tested by Frederiksberg Municipality to optimize their utilization of climate adaptation projects. Together with the University of Copenhagen, Smart Brønd has created a hydrological model that, together with their solution, can provide a stronger decision-making basis when preparing projects.

Successful partnership
The three partners of the Knowledge Bridge project each had their own knowledge and experience that together created the perfect synergy. Smart Brønd brought their monitoring solution that collected data. Frederiksberg Municipality had the test facilities in the city and the University of Copenhagen was responsible for building modeling of plant capacity and utilization. Together, they created a successful partnership that benefits all partners.

One of the major outcomes of the partnership was that greater clarity was created about the capacity, structure and functionality of climate adaptation systems during rain events. The results can be used by the municipality when investigating whether they can connect more catchment to existing pipes. Many times, existing drawings are not sufficient and need to be supplemented with real-time monitoring. Something that Smart Brønd’s solution offers, and which is being further developed to allow rain to fall without creating too much pressure on the sewer.
